With the new year comes new trends in home design and decor. If you’re thinking about building a new home in Omaha, you might want to think about some of these design trends to incorporate into your new living space. Popular items from last year like chevron prints and grey paint everywhere are on the way out while color and softer designs are all the rage this year. Classic design never goes out of style and if you like it don’t worry if it’s a trend this year or last year. What matters is that you like the way your home is designed.

So what are the new design trends of 2016?

  1. Black Stainless Steel – Every year the powers that be decide that stainless steel kitchen appliances is on the way out and it never quite comes to pass. This year Houzz predicts that black stainless steel will be the trend of the year. While black stainless steel is beautiful it may not make it into every new kitchen. Stainless is a classic, black stainless could be the avocado of 2016, follow this trend with caution.
  2. Losing the Dining Room – More and more homeowners are opting to do away with a room that rarely gets used but on holidays and other special occasions. As more homes employ an open floor plan for the main level with the focus on the kitchen and living areas the formal dining room is getting incorporated into the open space.
  3. Bidets – This is another prediction that may hold for the east and west coast areas but not likely to gain much traction in the midwest or western regions. According to Houzz 5% of master baths include a bidet, it remains to be seen if that number will increase.
  4. Low Tech Living Room – As families become nostalgic for a simpler time many are opting for an area in the home where high tech gadgets aren’t allowed. A low tech family room is the perfect place for families to unplug from the digital world and reconnect with one another.
  5. Rear Entry Foyers – For families with kids who play sports there’s nothing more convenient than a rear entry foyer with lockers or cubbies for all the gear that gets thrown on the floor when the kids come home from practice. The rear foyer keeps everyone organized and ready to take off on a moments notice. By having a place for everyone to store their boots, coats and books you’re eliminate the time looking for lost mittens and scarves on these cold winter mornings.
