Building a new home requires a pretty large investment. So, guaranteeing you love every room is important. However, that can be easier said than done, especially in the kitchen! With that in mind, we’ve put together a list of four tips to help you design a kitchen you’ll love for years to come. Check them out below!

1. Identify Your Shopping Habits

Analyzing your shopping patterns will help you determine how to set up your kitchen. This is especially important for planning the placement and structure of your pantry. Ask yourself the following questions about your grocery shopping habits.

  • Do you tend to stock up on staple items like canned vegetables or baking supplies?
  • How often do you shop for fresh produce?
  • Do you shop daily or as needed?

2. Analyze Your Cooking Habits

Do you love to cook or bake? Or, are you the type to just throw something in the microwave and call it good? Knowing your cooking habits, including how often you cook and what you use to cook will give you insight into your kitchen design. You’ll be able to ensure your kitchen has adequate storage for cookware and equipment as well as counter space to work.

3. Take Inventory of Your Cupboards

Having enough space to store all your kitchen equipment, food, and other kitchenware is essential to a functional kitchen design. Do you keep a lot of canned food on hand or do you prefer frozen? How big is your spice collection? Do you prefer to buy family-sized items from Costco? Another thing to keep in mind is where you store food for pets. If it’s in the kitchen, you’ll want to include a designated space in your design. All of these things play a role in determining the size and type of cabinetry your kitchen will have.

4. Get Real (Honest) About Your Cleanup Methods

Cleaning up after cooking dinner or baking dessert is the least fun part of the job, right? While that may be true, the way you clean will dictate your dish and glassware storage needs as well as the type of countertop that’s right for you. For example, if you like to wash dishes by hand, you’ll need extra counter space to allow them to air dry. Likewise, if your countertop experiences frequent spills, consider installing a quartz countertop which is a nonporous alternative to granite.
